Nearly 300 Andover dads and daughters got an early start on the 2008 holiday parties last weekend. The Department of Community Services hosted its annual Holly Ball, which has ballooned to a three-day event because of its popularity.

At a typical piano recital, a student plays a piece, takes a bow and calls it a day. Armando Belliard of Andover's experience was no different — until a performance at Atria Marland Place last Sunday.

Dalton column: Shattuck Farm Part II: From serving ice cream to being a memory

When I walk to the end of Old River Road, I try to imagine where the structures existed when the Shattucks lived there, and served their ice cream and Saturday night bean suppers. There are no buildings left today. In 1959, Interstate 93 cut through the farm just yards away from the Shattuck's home, marking the beginning of the end of the entire farm. By 1981, all of the farm structures were moved.

Three young Andover actors in Oliver
When Guy "Terry" Kelley of Bradford calls street urchins "my dears" in his role as Fagin in the play Oliver Twist, he isn't kidding. As the male lead, Fagin, the mastermind of thieves, one of Kelley's students is played by his own niece Emma Kelley, 9, of Andover. Both actors are veteran members of Pentucket Players.

Dalton column: Shattuck Farm: From Native Americans to ice cream

Shattuck's Ice Cream Stand was an Andover landmark between 1937 and 1965.
It was on one of Andover's oldest farms, but 8,000 years before it was a farm, the land was host to the largest American Indian settlement in what would later be called New England. The settlement was along the south side of the Merrimack River, on the big bend that turns the river south and now marks the farthest point in the north-northwest part of Andover (west of where Interstate 93 crosses the river). The ice cream shop and original farmhouse were next to where I-93 now exists, just north of the Chateau Restaurant.
