Troop 76 tops at 'Winter Games' camporee

The Andover Townsman

---- — Troop 76 Super Ducks won first place overall at last month’s Winter Camporee at Mill Pond Recreation Area in West Newbury.

The troop sent 10 Scouts and nine adults to the Jan. 25 camping trip that is run by the Northern Light District of Yankee Clipper Council, Boy Scouts of America

“Winter Games” was the theme of this year’s camporee. There were 10 games and challenges, including fire building, curling, broom hockey and slingshot biathlon. The adults of Troop 76 ran the elephant walk, two boards with ropes attached, requiring five Scouts to work as a team using the boards as skis over a timed course.

Troop 76 placed first in three of the events as well as second in the annual Great Sled Race and third in the stew cooking competition with its version of Sandusky Stew, and walked away with the camporee’s top prize.

Part of the trip included the overnight Freeze-Out, where many spend the night in tents. The temperature that night reached a chilly 11 degrees with 20- to 30-mph wind gusts coming off Mill Pond.

Troop 76, which is part of West Wind District, Yankee Clipper Council, meets Friday nights at 7 at Ballard Vale United Church on Clark Road. It intends to continue attending this camporee for years to come.
