Beavers and more at AVIS annual dinner

The Andover Village Improvement Society returns to the Phillips Academy Log Cabin at 212 Highland Road in Andover for its annual dinner on Tuesday, March 11, at 6 p.m.

Dr. Jonathan Lyon of the Merrimack College Biology Department is this year’s guest speaker.

He will discuss beavers and their impact on the broad array of other species that inhabit the neighborhoods around their dams and lodges. His presentation will include information on his longitudinal study of beavers in the area around Andover and how he hopes that study will assist in the planning for dealing with these clever beasts.

Lyon has broad research interests in applying ecological approaches to help understand, predict and ultimately solve real-world problems. He work has focused on plant community ecology, the character of ecotones between communities and across landscapes, the impacts of human disturbance on plant community structure and dynamics, conservation biology and environmental management. He also has an interest in freshwater, aquatic plant communities.

The public is invited to join AVIS for the evening. Social hour starts at 6 p.m., followed by the buffet dinner at 7. Tickets are $28. For tickets, send a check payable to AVIS to Elizabeth Poland, 22 Wolcott Ave., Andover 01810.

Lyon’s presentation will begin at 8 p.m. and is open to the public at no cost.

For more information, call 978-475-6159.
