Tsongas visits for Read Across America Day

---- — U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas treated the youngsters at Andover’s Professional Center for Child Development to a tale and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of where she works during a visit on Monday for Read Across America Day.

Tsongas read “My Senator and Me: A Dog’s-Eye View of Washington, D.C.” to the children in the center’s developmental day school and preschool. The book by Sen. Ted Kennedy and David Small offers a look at life in the nation’s capital from the perspective of the late U.S. senator from Massachusetts and his very perceptive companion, a Portuguese water dog named Splash.

The annual Read Across America program aims to promote the value of reading to students nationwide. Schools across the country invite readers from their community into the classroom to talk about how reading affects their everyday life.

The children at the Osgood Street center thanked Tsongas by presenting her with a handmade card.

Her visit was part of the center’s Community Guest Reader Series. The center serves students from across the Merrimack Valley, Tewksbury, Lowell and beyond.
