---- — Andover High’s Eamon Callahan was recently honored for his selection as a nominee for appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.

He is one of 19 young men and women from the Third Congressional District who have been nominated by U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas for appointment to one of the U.S. Service Academies, including the U.S. Military, Naval and Merchant Marine in addition to Air Force Academy.

Each student was nominated following an evaluation of their academic records, extracurricular activities and in-person interviews with Tsongas’ independent Academies Nomination Committee. Prospective students must meet strict academic qualifications for selection.

Once the congresswoman’s nominations are forwarded to the service academies, each student’s eligibility is evaluated based on their academic and extracurricular record, leadership skills, physical stamina and other requirements. Appointments for entrance are offered by the academies as the students are evaluated. Last year, six of those students nominated by Tsongas received appointments to one of the U.S. military service academies.

“These nominees stood out because of their exemplary academic records, as well as their outstanding achievements in athletics and extracurricular activities,” Tsongas said in a release. “They have each exhibited a strong desire to serve their communities and their country, which make them excellent representatives of the Third District and its proud military tradition. “

Tsongas held a reception for the nominees and their families earlier this month at Lowell City Hall.
