Celebration of Greek independence

The Andover Townsman

---- — The Greek Language School of Andover commemorated the 193rd anniversary of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 with a cultural program of poetry and dance on Sunday, March 23, in the Family Life Center at Sts. Constantine and Helen Church on Chandler Road in Andover.

Greece’s independence from the Ottoman Empire is remembered every year on March 25 together with the Annunciation of the Theotokos.

Suzan Kritzas, a teacher at the Greek Language School, said the students spent considerable time working on the program, which featured ethnic costumes and Greek dancing and poetry.

“The Greek nation and Greeks all over the world owe gratitude to the thousands of brave men and women who gave their lives for freedom,” Kritzas said in a release. “Their faith, their sacrifice and bravery paved the road to independence and the acquisition of human rights by the Greek people after being oppressed for 400 years by the Ottoman Empire.”

The annual Greek Independence Day commemoration was held in Boston this past Sunday, April 6.
