Boys climb Scouting ranks after overnight event

Members of Troop 76 went to sleep last Friday as boys. Shortly after they woke up, they became Boy Scouts.

On Friday night, March 22, into the early hours of the morning, Scouts of Ballardvale’s Troop 76 spent an overnight session at MetroRock North, an indoor rock climbing facility in Newburyport. The location in Newburyport is at the base of the giant windmill off Route 1. This was the troop’s fourth visit and overnight in as many years. The idea was brought up by a Scout and it has been a staple of the troop’s annual schedule ever since.

Saturday morning, March 23, the Troop attended and took part in its Cross-Over Ceremony as part of Cub Scout Pack 76’s Blue and Gold Banquet, held at Old Town Hall. The Cross-Over is when the Webelos II Cub Scouts receive their Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouts. They then cross over to Boy Scouts.

Nine Webelos received this award. Before they received their accolades Den Chief Justin Bacchi and other Troop 76 members applied ceremonial paint to their cheeks.

In addition to their Arrow of Light, Packmaster Brain Major presented each Scout with an arrow handmade by Navajos. As they crossed over they were greeted into Boy Scouts by Troop 76 Scoutmaster Don Milligan and Assistant Scoutmaster Craig Milligan. They were then given an official BSA neckerchief slide to wear with their new Boy Scout neckerchiefs.

Troop 76 meets Friday nights at the Ballard Vale United Church, 23 Clark Road in Andover. Pack 76 meets at the Andover Sportsmen’s Club on Middleton Road in North Andover.
