75 Years Ago - Aug. 16, 1935
Frank H. Hardy, for several years selectman and assessor of the town and chairman of the junior high school project committee, resigned his position on the project this week. It is understood that poor health prompted the resignation. This is the first time in 12 years that Mr. Hardy has held no public office.
One of the saddest tragedies occurring in Andover for some time was the death last Saturday morning of R. Earle Bourne, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bourne of 48 Summer street, who was found by his fellow workers crushed in a freight elevator in the Vermont Tea and Butter store warehouse opposite the railroad station. He was rushed to a physician's office and then to the Lawrence General hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.
More than 100 dolls of all kinds and sizes were entered by their young owners in the doll show at the playground last Friday evening. A parade in which the playground girls exhibited their favorites was a feature and the judges were Thelma Beck, Agnes Deyermond, and Alice Robertson. James Doherty was the announcer.
Mrs. J. Everett Collins and sons, James and Raymond of Summer street, spent Tuesday at Lynn Beach.

50 Years Ago - Aug. 18, 1960
"It's exceedingly necessary that we fill the job." That's Dr. Milton J. Meyers assertion, relating to the vacant assistant superintendent's post. Furthermore, Dr. Meyers believes that the School Committee and Supt. Edward I. Erickson agree with him. However, the School Committee chairman feels that the board should not be rushed into appointing someone — rather, sufficient time should be taken in interviews and discussion prior to that final action.
The initial urban renewal survey by a two-man team form the consulting firm of Candeub and Fleissig will begin about Sept. 1, it was revealed Tuesday night at a public session. The Housing Authority met with the original citizen's committee to explain how the plan is progressing, and answer questions that have come up since the larger committee.

Representatives from the Andover Community School Age Child Care Committee appeared before the School Committee Tuesday night to request that school bus routes in the Bancroft and West School districts include drop-offs to two area day-care centers for students who require before- and after-school day care.
John Davidson, popular Broadway star and television performer, kicks off the third season of performing arts at the J. Everett Collins Center in Andover. September marks the explosion of a spectacular line-up of unique musical experiences and extraordinary theater entertainment.
A petition calling for equal consideration of female varsity athletes that was signed by 60 Andover residents was presented to the School Committee during Tuesday evening's meeting of the board. "Both boys' and girls' sports deserve equal attention form the School Committee in providing reasonable uniforms, safe equipment, equal locker rooms, and other facilities such as fields and gyms," the petition stated.
