Richard Fink of Andover will be hopping on his bicycle Sunday for the annual Tour de Cure to benefit the American Diabetes Association’s movement to stop diabetes. The fundraiser based at the Topsfield Fairgrounds in Topsfield aims to raise funds to change the future of diabetes.
A type 1 diabetic, Fink is known as a Red Rider — people with diabetes who are bringing awareness to the disease and raising money to stop it by participating in American Diabetes Association-sponsored cycling events across the country.
His involvement began eight years ago when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 55. Soon after, he attended a diabetes expo in Boston, where he learned about the Tour de Cure and signed up.
“I like the Red Rider program,” he says in a release. “It is a way of feeling special, a good special, and my inspiration is knowing that by riding and raising money, I help everyone with diabetes.”
