The Andover Townsman
---- — Gabriella Smith of Andover received her Girl Scout Gold Award pin on Wednesday, June 19, at a ceremony at the Marlborough Holiday Inn. The event was attended by family and friends as well as Ruth N. Bramson, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, and Elizabeth Stevenson, board president.
Smith‘s Gold Award project, Rediscovering Haggetts Pond Through Modern Technology, sought to promote the trails surrounding the town property. She used modern technology to make information about the trail more accessible and appealing.
Using GPS and cartography software, Smith created a detailed map of the area. She then worked with volunteers to develop an informational website about Haggetts Pond as well as a kiosk displaying a QR code that brings smartphone users directly to the website.
The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve, and it recognizes a service project that fulfills a need within a girl’s community, whether local or global; creates change and an becomes ongoing effort. Only approximately 5 percent of all Girl Scouts earn the award each year.
