---- — Phillips rallies Against The Tide’s Team Tadlock

Michele Phillips of Andover honored family members who succumbed to breast cancer as the leader of Team Tadlock at Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s 21st annual Against the Tide swim, kayak, walk or run fundraiser in Hopkinton last month.

The event raised more than $77,000 and counting, with 11-member Team Tadlock bringing in the highest total at $2,865.

Phillips, who lost both her grandmothers and a young cousin to breast cancer, works for the state Department of Youth Services, and many of her coworkers as well as family members and friends were part of her team. She hopes to assemble an even bigger team and raise even more funds next year.

Fox joining 22-mile plunge against cancer

For the fifth year, Michele Fox of Andover will participate in Swim Across America, Boston, on Friday, July 12. The 22-mile relay swim, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, raises funds for the fight against cancer.

Fox is part of a team supporting Massachusetts General Hospital for Children Cancer Center and its work.

She says on her sponsorship page that when she first did the swim, she knew a few people who had been diagnosed with cancer and had lost several people to the disease, including Mamere (her grandmother), an uncle, her best friend’s mother and a friend. Those numbers have grown over the five years and she has watched her own mother successfully battle cancer, she says.

This year, Fox will be swimming for a friend, a nonsmoker who was diagnosed 10 months ago with stage IV lung cancer, as well as an aunt, her college roommate and other survivors as wel as those still fighting their battles with the disease. She hopes her participation contributes to efforts that will some day result in a cure.

Proceeds from the event go to Massachusetts General Hospital for Children Cancer Center and The David Perini Quality of Life Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
