100 years ago Dec. 24, 1909
A skating party composed of Andoverites took advantage of the fine condition of the ice and went to Martin's Pond Tuesday evening, where a good time was enjoyed.
Frank P. Higgins, the well-known local baker, has installed a lunch counter in his shop which will be a great convenience to all, especially to those who are in the habit of waiting for the trolleys.
The Metropolitan will be open Saturday morning until 11:00 o'clock for the benefit of those who may have forgotten to make necessary purchases.
The macadamized road is one of the blessings of modern times. It is also we fear, one of the curses. Not in the summer, when the watering cart or some other form of dust-laying keeps the surface down, but just as the ground is frozen and the grinding of the horses and the wheels of vehicles have begun their deadly work, then begins the deadly work of the dust from the macadamized road.

75 years ago Dec. 21, 1934
A decision to drop the revised plans of the Boston architects [for the new junior high school] was made this week by the building committee, which it is understood intends instead to affect some savings in the original plans of Perley F. Gilbert. The facades will not be changed, nor will the size of the buildings, it is understood.
A public whist party will be held at the Square and Compass club this evening at 8:00 o'clock by the British war veterans. Twelve Christmas baskets will be given away.
The house and about four acres of land of Miss Lila M. French on Porter Road have been sold to Henry C. Sanborn of four Morton Street through Frederick E. Cheever.

50 years ago Dec. 23, 1959
The Selectmen considered three department budgets at their meeting Monday night. The total tentative Assessors' budget stands at $20,560.; the Planning Board tentative budget was $7,131, and the estimated total for the Fire Department was $177,084.
Another "top" year has been recorded at the post office as Christmas mail exceeded last years' by over 2,000 cancellations. Postmaster Stephen A. Boland tallied the cancellations at 533,782 compared to 531,077 in the same period last year.
The Andover Playhouse presents "The Big Circus" with Victor Mature and Rhonda Fleming; "Littlest Hobo" with Buddy Hart and Wendy Stuart; "A House on the Haunted Hill" with Vincent Price and Carol Ohmart, on Friday and Saturday.

Scout brings new boardwalk to Pustell Reservation
Eagle Scout candidate Evan Doyle, 15, of Andover stands with Conservation Commission Project Manager Bob Decelle at the edge of a 60-foot boardwalk Doyle built that allows people to cross the Pustell Reservation to other green areas of town.

Pair return from four years at sea
After nearly four years of living afloat, Sara and Bob Knapp of 1 Woodland Road sailed back into their home port of Salem, Mass. earlier this month with their yellow labrador, Bentley aboard.

Dalton column: Readers recall the great storms of '54
"During the hurricane several huge pines fell across Abbot Street near where I lived as a girl. Fortunately, they fell on open space and no houses were damaged," wrote Margaret Blake in response to my column about the two summer storms of 1954. The first and more violent of the two storms was Hurricane Carol, which was the storm Margaret mentioned. It had top winds of 125 mph and was followed by the flooding rains of Hurricane Edna two weeks later.
