Senior Center Activities
The Andover Senior Center at 30 Whittier Court, behind Town Offices at 36 Bartlet St. can be reached for information by calling 978-623-8321. Upcoming activities include:
New Year's Eve Afternoon Celebration: Dec. 31, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $5. Come ring in the New year, with food, fun and entertainment from Russ McQueen. Tickets available now - advance only.
New, Beginner's Tai Chi: Tuesdays, Jan. 12 to March 9; 11:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., $32, at Old Town Hall.¬ Registration has begun for this class.
Adaptive Home Equipment Forum: Jan. 8, 10 to 11 a.m. Hear about and see some of the equipment that helps us stay safe in our homes longer. Hosted by Letourneau's Pharmacy.¬ Call us to hold a spot for this free forum.
Soup's On - The ABC's of Getting Published:¬ Jan. 12, lunch at noon, lecture at 12:30; $4.¬ Learn from local publisher, the Cheshire Group, which will tell us the process of limited run publishing and hear about local writers who fulfilled a life-long dream of publishing their writing.
Men's Breakfast: Jan. 15, 8:30 a.m., $4. Travel back in time from 1790 to the present day to learn the history of our modern-day U.S. Coast Guard.¬ Join naval historian and writer Joe Ponti as he shares his research and experience on this crucial element of our Homeland Security.
Lunch Box Café: Our deli-style café is open for lunch weekdays for reasonably priced wraps, hot panini, freshly made salads and daily specials all priced under $5. Call ahead and we'll have it ready. Daily full lunch by reservation to all 60 and older residents for a suggested price of $2.75. Stop by for menu.
Free Blood Pressure Clinic: The Andover Board of Health holds a free blood pressure and wellness clinic at the center every Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. The clinic is open to all Andover seniors on a first come, first served basis.
Snow Policy: When Andover Public Schools are closed for weather-related issues, the center is also closed for all programs, lunch and Meals on Wheels. Call our info line at 978-623-8377 for specific classes that may be affected by weather.
There is still availability in most aerobic, strength- training, tap and yoga classes now in session.
All classes may be audited one time, pending available space. Call the Andover Senior Center at 978-623-8321, or drop by for a tour.

Scout brings new boardwalk to Pustell Reservation
Eagle Scout candidate Evan Doyle, 15, of Andover stands with Conservation Commission Project Manager Bob Decelle at the edge of a 60-foot boardwalk Doyle built that allows people to cross the Pustell Reservation to other green areas of town.
Move over Snookie! Andover has a brand new boardwalk in town.

Andover's boardwalk story has a lot less drama than Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi's reality TV show Jersey Shore, set on a New Jersey boardwalk. Here, it's all about an Andover teen who simply wanted to do something nice for his hometown. -
Pair return from four years at sea
After nearly four years of living afloat, Sara and Bob Knapp of 1 Woodland Road sailed back into their home port of Salem, Mass. earlier this month with their yellow labrador, Bentley aboard.

Dalton column: Readers recall the great storms of '54
"During the hurricane several huge pines fell across Abbot Street near where I lived as a girl. Fortunately, they fell on open space and no houses were damaged," wrote Margaret Blake in response to my column about the two summer storms of 1954. The first and more violent of the two storms was Hurricane Carol, which was the storm Margaret mentioned. It had top winds of 125 mph and was followed by the flooding rains of Hurricane Edna two weeks later.
