100 Years Ago Jan. 26, 1912

Residents of West Andover are filling their icehouses with ice from Haggett's Pond. The harvest this year is unusually good, the ice being in some places fifteen inches thick.

Charles Emerson, the local expressman, has purchased the property on Chestnut street now occupied by Mrs. Albert W. Pike.

A large number of the employees of the Tyer Rubber Company were temporarily laid off last week owing to the present quietness in business.

The winner of the pig given by Mrs. Barton at Wonderland last night was Selectman H. M. Eames.

75 Years Ago Jan. 22, 1937

Andover's political situation changed but slightly this week with only two new candidates entering the field. Edward Downs of North Main street added his name to the growing list which has taken out nomination papers for tree warden, and William McCoubrie of Washington avenue was the first non-office holder to take out nomination papers for one of the two Board of Public Works positions.

A hundred keg of nails, three sheets of zinc and four bundles of shingles were stolen from a house under construction on Lincoln street Wednesday night, the builder Arthur O'Hara reported to police.

Plans for extensive alterations in the heating system at the Bradlee school were discussed Tuesday evening at the special meeting of the school board, and it was decided to call for bids on the project. The present old boiler, and the radiation in the various rooms increased.

50 Years Ago Jan. 25, 1962

The Andover Housing Authority is looking for a new director for its Urban Renewal program, following the resignation of James W. Franklin from that post.

The selectmen, faced with a request to re-open the warrant briefly at Monday night's meeting, turned thumbs down on the procedure. The request came from Harold Abbott, who wished to insert an article calling for a free dental clinic, at which fluoride could be made available for whose wishing to have it.

Public school facilities will continue to be used for the showing of foreign films, under the sponsorship of the local Cinema Classics committee. In effect, the endeavor was ruled non-commercial, and non-competitive with the Andover Playhouse.

25 Years Ago Jan. 29, 1987

If all goes well, Andover could begin a pilot program of after-school day care for its "latchkey" children by the beginning of the next school year. Monday night, following the presentation of a report on local child care needs by the head of the Andover Child Care Study Committee, members of the Board of Selectmen directed Town Manager Kenneth Mahoney to meet with school officials to formulate plans for a townwide service.

Friday's basketball game at Andover High School started out slowly, with Central Catholic quickly drawing first blood. It wasn't until three minutes into the game that a hoop by Mark Tucker put the Golden Warriors on the board.

In the midst of today's "supermarket style" optical stores, a small Main street shop has managed to grow and prosper. "I come to Andover Optical because of the personal service and attention—I don't need to take a number to be helped," said on local resident. John Simko, owner of Andover Optical, has been a licensed optician for 22 years.
