Local woman starts monthly fun night to beat social disconnect

---- — “Sorry, I’m busy.”

That’s seems to be the universal answer for people when they are invited somewhere. It’s leading to a town filled with isolation and a lack of social connections, says Sherry Lundquist, who has lived in Andover for several years.

“I have been feeling the need for more community connections as a way to help create a kinder and more friendly town,” said Lundquist, a teacher’s assistant at West Middle School.

She has organized a monthly get-together where her passions will come to life and everyone is welcome to join her.

MAD Fridays (the MAD acronym stands for music, art and dance) happen on Friday nights from 7 to 9 at Unitarian Universalist Church at 6 Locke St. Most events are free.

“It’s not spiritual, it’s just a fun night,” said Lundquist, who attends the church. “I’m only doing it at the church because they are letting me use the space.”

Lundquist had to cancel her first MAD event because of the blizzard. She planned to center the evening around a Journey Dance and will reschedule the event. But, MAD Fridays will go.

The next MAD Friday is March 8 when a kirtan (bakhti yoga practice of devotion) is led by Ravi and the Solar Dynasty Band. It’s a family friendly event and kids of all ages are welcome, she said.

There will be opportunities for everyone to chant, sing, dance and play with rhythm instruments, said Lundquist, who leads drumming circles in her free time.

“It’s an evening of yoga and a creative art event,” said Lundquist, also a serious yogini.

She said the space at the church is large and spacious with a hardwood floor, and it’s handicap accessible.

“I know everyone is busy but I really wanted to bring our community together...people work all day and then put the TV on. Get out and have some fun,” Lundquist said. “Do something fun and meet people.”
