Reclaiming the river one abandoned boat at a time

About three dozen people gathered to welcome fall at the Autumnal Equinox Celebration offered by the at Pomps Pond Shawsheen River Watershed Association this past Saturday, Sept. 22.

People could borrow canoes, make s’mores around a campfire and listened to a short presentation on the astronomy of the equinox and how different cultures have celebrated the harvest season, according to the group. An informal Kubb tournament was also offered, introducing some people to a Swedish lawn game involving firewood.

Next up? Diving into the river to remove some big boats.

"There are several large broken, damaged, abandoned boats in the river between Route 38 [in] Tewksbury and Lowell Junction Road, Andover. These are not canoes or kayaks. These are large boats more commonly seen on lakes and ponds. We would dearly love to get them out of the river and dispose of them properly," according to Jack Brady.

The SRWA is looking for volunteers to help this Saturday morning, Sept. 29. Depending on the response, the association will decide which boats to target and how many to go after.

People interested in helping should contact the group at bob_otter@comcast.net.

Watch, discuss U.S. Senate debate

Didn't get tickets to the Scott Brown/Elizabeth Warren U.S. Senatorial debate in Lowell? You don't have to feel left out. People can join the local League of Women Voters and watch the debate together live, on Oct. 1.

Those interested will gather at 7 p.m. at the Andover Safety Center, 32 North Main St. in Andover.

Immediately following the debate, the League will offer a discussion led by Dr. Harry Wessel, chairman of the Political Science Department at Merrimack College in Andover and North Andover. All are welcome.

Fundraiser flattened by the wind

RE/Max donated its hot air balloon at last Saturday’s Andover Day, planning to donate money raised by riders to the planned Andover youth center. Unfortunately, while the balloon was ready, it was too windy for rides in the morning, and none could be offered as planned, said Bill Fahey, director of Andover Youth Services. It simply was not safe, he said. That Saturday turned into a beautiful day as the hours ticked away.
