The rain could have put a damper on Saturday's Andover Lacrosse Day.

But the children decided to embrace it instead, sliding all over the muddy Shawsheen Field with their sticks to raise money for a new artificial turf field at Andover High School.

"I like the rain when I'm playing lacrosse," said Tyler Lacroix, 12. "You have more fun. You can slip around harder."

The Andover Lacrosse Association held the event | full of scrimmages, silent auctions, raffles and umbrellas | with the goal of raising about $20,000.

That's their share of the Lovely Field construction price tag.

In exchange for its donation, the Andover Lacrosse Association will be able to use the field on the weekends, along with the Andover Youth Soccer and Andover Youth Football leagues.

"This new turf will help us get on the field earlier in the year," organizer Ann Weld said. "New England weather stops lacrosse players from taking the field in the early spring, when they should be practicing."

The artificial turf should be ready for players by mid-August, just in time for fall sport practices.
