Andover Public Schools will be a host district for 35 students from South Korea, starting next year.
The students range in age from 4th to 10th grade, and will be visiting in two waves: Jan. 4 through Jan. 26, and Jan. 4 through Feb. 18. Administrators are seeking families interested in hosting one of these international students.
"The guest students will attend Andover Public Schools from Monday to Friday, and go on culturally enriching field trips on Saturdays," Dr. Jorge Allen, the district's Coordinator, English Language Learners & World Language Programs said. "Host families will take care of the guest students as they do for their own children, providing room & board as well as family activities on Sundays."
The students will be hosted through the Endorsement for Global Engagement Program at Andover Public Schools and the Educational Divide Reform. Through their stay, Allen said interested families would provide "care and support as an essential part of the international students' educational experience in the United States."
"Living with a host family," he added, "will enable students to learn better about American culture and to gain practice with their English language skills."
Host families will also be compensated, $800 for hosting a student from the first group, and $1,700 for hosting a student from the second group.
