The Andover Robotics Club, ARC, Team Thunder traveled to Detroit to compete in the FIRST World Championships.
It was the first time ARC competed in the championship. Over 20 members from Andover challenged other teams from around the world at the event.
The team pulled together to re-design their robot, nicknamed "Thor," from the ground up.
While at the event, team members were able to meet other teams from countries across the globe, as well as teams from the other FIRST programs: FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Lego League Jr.
Through conversations, ARC learned about ways to improve their own processes.
“Being able to see how other teams designed their robot and prepared for worlds was incredible and I think it will make us better next year," said Alana Mackay-Kao, a sophomore from team ARC Hailstorm who also attended the championship.
ARC’s newly elected president, Jolene Pern, a junior, was also invited to the World Championships as a FIRST Dean’s List Finalist.
As a Dean’s List Finalist, Pern was one of three chosen in the state to attend the Dean’s List Luncheon, where 10 Dean’s List Winners were announced. Though Pern was not one of the winners, she had the opportunity to meet Dean Kamen, the founder of FIRST and inventor of the segway.
ARC is now gearing up for the next season and release of the new FIRST Tech Challenge game “Skystone” in September.
