Dorothy is back with her trio of faithful friends, the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man - as Doherty Middle School's Drama Club performs "The Wiz" this weekend.

Dorothy is distressed and confused in this post-tornado show and wants only to return to Auntie Em, Uncle Henry and Toto in Kansas. The Wicked Witch of the East was killed, and Dorothy just wants to go home. Her best bet is to go and see the great and powerful Wizard of Oz to make it happen.

Student-directed by Rachel Drew, Taejasvi Narayan and Claire Tellekson-Flash, the show involves that famous yellow brick road journey in search of The Wiz, taken by teen actors.

"It's just a great cast" said DMS health teacher Cheryl Todesco, who is helping with the show's production. "They are so excited about the show."

She said 45 students at the middle school are acting while another 20 are handling the show's technical needs behind the scenes.

Special effects are included in this show as students are showing off all sorts of talent. They aren't the only ones, says Todesco.

"Our parents have been great with set design," Todesco said.
