An Andover volunteer for the American Red Cross was among nine volunteers from across Massachusetts honored last week for their service to local communities.

Volunteer Joel Janovsky of Andover was honored for his service, receiving the Service to the Armed Forces Award for his work helping military members, their families and veterans.

Janovsky is retired from a 30-year career in information technology, in which he held positions in software engineering and project management for a variety of Massachusetts companies, including Biogen, Harvard University, Fidelity Investments and Iron Mountain.

He previously attended the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, where he received an undergraduate degree in computer systems engineering. He has a graduate degree in computer science from Boston University.

Janovsky served in the Marine Corps during the 1970s in a military police/corrections unit at Camp Pendleton and as a Marine embassy guard in Vienna, Austria.

He and his wife, Amy, are longtime residents of Andover.
