JoAnn Kalogianis Spaneas is determined to help provide relief to those on the front lines fighting the coronavirus.
The Andover resident and three other area women teamed up to form Fuel the Fight — The Andovers, Inc., a local nonprofit organization that is part of a larger national movement that provides meals from area restaurants to hospital workers.
Spaneas said she and her team have raised about $15,000 in just a matter of weeks through a GoFundMe page.
So far, the organization has donated about 1,400 meals to Lawrence General Hospital.
“Having been in hospital care so often, between my own care and family members, I see how difficult it is behind hospital walls,” Spaneas said. “But what we do is more than food: It’s motivational, inspirational support for all the healthcare workers behind those walls.”
Nineteen area restaurants are taking part in the initiative.
Al Ruthazer, vice president of the Rotary Club of Andover which donated $1,000 through Andover Cares, said this initiative is a win-win.
“We are helping the people who are taking care of the sickest part of the community and we are also helping the restaurants that are hurting during this very tough time,” he said.
