An Italian restaurant and a day care center are being built on River Road at the corner of Minuteman Drive. Development plans were approved by town planning officials months ago and the site work just started.
"They are building two buildings. One is a day care and the other is a restaurant," said Town Planner Lisa Schwarz.
Andiamo, the Italian eatery, already has locations in Newburyport and Chelmsford.
The development site at 159 and 161 River Road is 24,000 square feet in size, Schwarz said. The day care facility will consume 10,000 of them. A parking lot will have 134 spaces.
Jeff Spagat is the developer. His application to the Planning Board states that Pappas Realty Trust of Haverhill owns one lot, while his company owns the other.
The child care facility will take children from ages infant through 5 years old. Big housing developments have been built in this area of west Andover and many businesses are located in the vicinity. Also, highway accessibility is very close; I-93 has a River Road exit.
The developer filed a special permit in this ID2 district of Andover that was approved by the Planning Board.
ID2 means that an approved project "will bring amenities to the under-served commercial areas of River Road," according to the town's website. Dascomb Road also has an ID2 district.
An ID2 permit limits retail use to 25,000 square feet.
