As temperatures reached the highest point of the year Sunday, families in the Merrimack Valley took full advantage of the sunshine and clear, blue skies that accompanied Memorial Day weekend.
People rushed to Mad Maggie’s Ice Cream in North Andover to enjoy a cool ice cream treat. For some, it even substituted as their dinner.
From ice cream in waffle cones to soft serve in cups with sprinkles, it was the tastiest way for people to bear Sunday’s unseasonable heat as temperatures in the region hit the 80s.
Nancy and John Martin of Andover were among those treating themselves to ice cream, which they said has become their dinner tradition every weekend in the warmer months. Their 4-year-old dog Mika also got to have a soft serve doggy ice cream.
But despite having her own, it didn’t stop Mika from jumping up to try and get a taste of her owners’, too.
The two said the weather was “awesome” and noted they took full advantage of it by taking a ride on their motorcycle — enjoying a cool breeze in the hot sun.
The rest of their long weekend would include enjoying the weather, relaxing and doing yard work.
The Abdella family — Alicia, Paul and their 3-year-old daughter, Penelope, spent the day at the Andover Center Playground.
Dressed in a patriotic stars and stripes outfit, Penelope glided down the tall slide as her mom greeted her at the bottom with open arms.
Penelope said the slide was her favorite thing at the park.
The weather brought several people out to the parks and fields in Andover to enjoy the day before taking the time Monday to observe Memorial Day.
Monday, with clear blue skies, was a little cooler but overall, it was a stellar long weekend.
