ANDOVER — The National Honor Society at Andover High School inducted 109 new members in November during a ceremony at the Collins Center.

To be considered for membership, juniors and seniors must have a 3.75 weighted grade point average (4.25 unweighted), complete 50 hours of community service, provide character references, demonstrate leadership and participate in a variety of school and community activities.

The Nov. 6 ceremony was followed by a reception for students, their families and more than 40 faculty members who were chosen by the inductees for recognition for the contributions they’ve made to students’ academic, social and civic growth.

Ellen Minzner, head coach of U.S. Paralympic Rowing, was the guest speaker. Current members of the National Honor Society provided musical entertainment.

“This is an exceptional group of students who work hard and are involved in many aspects of the school,” said Brian Shea, English teacher and National Honor Society adviser. “In addition to being made up of a variety of students who excel in academics, athletics, and the arts, NHS students are a group of generous, caring and respectful kids who are deeply involved in their community.”

Inductees were expected to go right to work in helping with the National Honor Society’s apple pie fundraiser. Students made and sold more than 500 pies to raise money for Lazarus House.
