Emergency preparedness in Andover will be enhanced by having areal shelter in town. Included in plans for the Special Town Meeting on Wednesday June 19 is funding for changes at the Andover Senior Center which would give us that needed facility. This money is from the Columbia Gas settlement, and will not increase our tax bills. It will enhance our safety in times of crisis. Images of flooding and storm damage enhance the sense of urgency on this matter.
The Andover Senior Center already serves as a haven in times of emergency: a cooling center in spells of extreme heat, a warming center during winter power outages. It was a hub of safety with access to important information and services during the Columbia Gas crisis. This support continued for weeks after the explosions and fires. Now is the time when changes can be incorporated into the renovations at the Senior Center; especially important are permanent showers rather than portable units.
Please come to the Special Town Meeting at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Auditorium (between the Town Offices and the Senior Center, not the usual Collins Center at the High School). We all need your support at this Special Town Meeting, and please spread the word.
