As someone who worked for many years in the realm of elder advocacy, the information contained in your Opinion piece last week did not surprise me.
However, may I suggest that the aging of our population be viewed from a different perspective than the one reflected in your headline, “Aging population presents problems”? (Townsman, May 19)
To quote the great John W. Gardner, “We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as unsolvable problems.”
The current demographic shift provides great opportunities to make our homes and communities more age friendly, and to develop better approaches to health care and caregiving, among other things. Furthermore, the responses we develop will not only provide a better quality of life for our seniors but will have a positive impact on all generations.
