Along with many other town residents, I attended the Special Town Meeting in the fall of 2018 in which a new fire station was approved to be built in Ballardvale. In that meeting, we were assured that the project cost would not exceed the amount approved that evening given the methodology used in preparing the estimate.
Firm cost estimates, based on actual plans and bids, were to be available in time for the annual Town Meeting in the spring of 2019. A proposal to approve funding for only the final planning and estimating work and to delay approving the construction budget until the spring meeting was rejected.
Nearly a year and a half later, the project seems to have fallen off the radar. Perhaps the Townsman could devote a column or two to updating us on this major town initiative.
