Giangrande, Post 8 score big win

Jason Giangrande only needed 70 pitches to toss a complete game on Sunday, powering Andover Post 8 past Methuen Post 122, 7-1.

The only run that crossed for Methuen was unearned, as Giangrande, an Andover resident who plays at Austin Prep, cruised through the night.

Post 8’s offense was led by Nolan Schirmer, who went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Alex Weinreb went 2 for 2, scoring two runs and driving in another, while Alex Pisacreta went 1 for 2, scored once and drove in one more.

Two runs crossed in the second inning for Andover, which then scored two more in the fourth and three in the sixth. Methuen’s lone run was scored in the sixth frame.

Arvin Nunez tossed six innings and struck out five while walking just one, but Andover Post 8 fell to Middleton-Peabody, 4-1, on Friday.

Andover scored its lone run in the fourth on a Nolan Schirmer sacrifice fly. Alex Weinreb led off the inning with a single, and was singled over to second by Matt Potts before a wild pitched advanced the runners up.

Nolan Schirmer reached base three times with a single and two walks, while Andrew Theriault and Gavin Kelsey had one RBI each but Andover fell to Lawrence 6-2 last Wednesday.

Shantanio leads the way

Richie Shahtanian notched 12 points and Andover rolled past Newburyport 72-45 in Hoops for Hope summer league action last Tuesday.

Despite 17 points for Richie Shahtanian, Andover lost to Lowell Catholic 66-61 last Thursday.

Football

Florio offered

Andover kicker Shamus Florio has received an offer from Brown University football, he announced on Twitter on Saturday.

Last fall, Florio kicked five field goals — his longest 43 yards — and was 21 of 23 on extra points. He averaged 35.5 yards on 27 punts and 43.0 yards on 37 kickoffs. Also a talented linebacker, he was fifth on the team with 33 tackles.

Brown is coached by James Perry, the brother of Andover coach E.J. Perry III.
