BOYS BASKETBALL

NORTH ANDOVER | Andover High basketball coach Dave Fazio has struggled long and hard with his 11-man rotation, looking to fine-tune and cut it to a more traditional "eight."

After Saturday night's battle with Salem in the Greater Lawrence Christmas Tournament opener, he might just hold off on the slicing.

Andover grabbed a second-quarter lead and withstood every punch Salem threw, grinding out a 60-45 win over the Blue Devils, which is coached by former Andover High star E.J. Perry, a teacher at West Elementary School.

"We could definitely feel them tiring down the stretch," said Andover hero Tristian Shannon, who scored six of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, which the Warriors ended on a 15-4 burst.

Salem, which played only six men in the second half, had expended so much energy, climbing uphill nearly all night, and simply ran out of gas.

"You may have heard me (all the way to Harrison's Roast Beef) in the fourth quarter screaming, 'Run, run, run' because I felt we were in better shape there," said Fazio, whose club improved to 4-0.

"Tristian played the way this team needs him to play. I don't care what you say, losing in this tournament before Christmas is hard to handle. That's a state-championship winning team coming off a giant win against one of their biggest rivals (defending N.H. Class L runner-up Trinity of Manchester). This is a big win."

Derrick Beasley came off the bench and led all scorers with 22. Greg Cook, who spent most of the night Velcroed to the dead-eye Devil Josh Jones on defense, added nine.

Andover has had Salem's number over the years, winning the last seven tourney matchups. The Warriors beat Salem in the 2006 semifinals, the 2002 third-place game, the 2001 opener, the 2000 fifth-place game, the 1994 title game, the 1992 third-place game and the 1988 consolations.
